Website vs Instagram: What Does a Local Business Need?
By Guru Prasad Y · Published
Many local businesses run entirely on Instagram, Google Maps and WhatsApp. It works, up to a point. The honest answer to “do I need a website too?” is usually yes, but not instead of Instagram. They do different jobs.
What Instagram does well
- Showing your work. Photos and short videos are a natural way to display food, hair, products or finished jobs.
- Staying in touch. Regular followers see your updates.
- Discovery. People can find you through hashtags, locations and other people’s shares.
- Low cost to start. An account is free and quick to set up.
If your business is visual, an active Instagram profile is an asset. Keep it.
Where Instagram falls short
- You do not own it. Your reach, your layout and sometimes your whole account are at the platform’s discretion. A change in the algorithm or a suspended account can remove years of effort.
- Information gets buried. Prices, timings, services and policies end up scattered across old posts and highlights. Customers cannot easily find them, and neither can search engines.
- It is a poor fit for search. Someone who searches Google for “salon in Indiranagar” is more likely to land on a website with that information than on an Instagram profile.
- It is hard to look established. Many customers, especially for higher-value services, look for a proper website as a sign of seriousness.
- Enquiries are informal. Direct messages go unseen, and there is no structure to what people send you.
What a website does well
- It is yours. The address, the content and the design stay under your control.
- It organises information. Services, prices, location, opening hours and policies live in one clear place.
- It works with search. A well-built site can be found by people who have never heard of you.
- It gives enquiries a structure. A form or a WhatsApp button with a ready-made message collects what you need to reply.
- It makes you easy to share. One link goes on your shop board, card, invoice and WhatsApp status.
Using them together
The strongest setup is not either/or:
- Instagram shows your latest work and personality.
- Your website holds the stable facts: what you offer, what it costs, where you are, how to book.
- Each points to the other. Your Instagram bio links to the site. Your site shows your latest posts or links to your profile.
- Google Maps and your Google Business Profile carry the same details as your website.
Keeping your name, address, phone number and hours identical everywhere helps customers trust you and helps search engines connect the pieces.
When can you wait?
Honestly, some businesses can wait, at least for a while:
- You are just testing an idea and not sure the business will continue.
- All your customers already know you personally and come through referrals.
- You have no time to keep a site accurate. An out-of-date website is worse than none.
When a website becomes worth it
- Customers ask the same questions every day.
- You want to be found by people who do not know you yet.
- You sell something where trust matters, like beauty services, education, repairs or professional advice.
- You are paying for ads and need somewhere to send people.
- You keep losing enquiries because details are scattered.
What to do next
If you are not sure which side of the line you are on, start small. A clear five-page website with a WhatsApp button and a contact form is enough to give your Instagram a solid home. You can read what a small business website should include, or look at how a site can work for your type of business, such as a café, a salon or a repair shop.
